The first day of the end of season testing at Abu Dhabi didn’t go to plan for McLaren as the Woking based team managed just a handful of laps following technical problems with the electronics on their new Honda Powered car. Stoffel Vandoorne didn’t manage any track time in the morning session, and then was limited to just one lap in the afternoon before the power unit stopped working and he coasted back to the pits.
It was a much better day for Williams Driver Valtteri Bottas who followed up from his strong showing on Sunday with the quickest time of the day, recording a 1:43.396 lap time – about 1 second faster than Ricciardo managed in the race.
Raikkonen was second quickest on the day ahead of Nico Rosberg while Jolyon Palmer ran well in the Force India to finish 4th fastest.
Formula Renault 3.5 winner Carlos Sainz Jr clocked a decent time to finish 5th fastest in the Red Bull as he tries to stake a claim for a race seat next season, but it wasn’t a great day for his potential teammate at Toro Rosso Max Verstappen who had a miserable day in the Toro Rosso, managing limited running and finishing slowest – around 4 seconds off the pace set by Bottas.
Caterham were present for testing with Will Stevens doing a solid job to finish around 2 seconds off the pace, while Ericsson had a slow day in the Sauber, and will be oping that the team can bounce back from their 2014 performance next year.
