There’s an end in sight to the ongoing drama of who’s going to drive for McLaren Honda in 2015, but fans won’t find out until December 1st at the earliest according to a tweet from the team today:
The non-announcement was met with some disdain from fans, with them accusing the team of showing a lack of respect to the drivers – especially Jenson Button, who looks likely to be heading for WEC for a tilt at the Le Mans 24H race next season.
Rumours have been swirling around the paddock for several weeks that Fernando Alonso has agreed to drive for McLaren in 2015 and 2016 but as yet there has been no confirmation about the deal. As a knock on, there is also no confirmation about the whereabouts of 4 time world champion Sebastian Vettel – although it’s understood that he has signed a deal with Ferrari.
Is it about Sponsorship?
One of the key reasons for the delay is likely to be the sponsorship deal between Santander and Ferrari and the driver’s promotional commitments related to it. Santander are also a sponsor of the McLaren team and Jenson Button features in their UK marketing which may further complicate the negotiations around driver line up for next year.
